Description

26 and 28 Bell Street are early 19th-century buildings that stand two stories tall with an attic. They feature a moulded coved cornice and a parapet with a cornice just above the eaves level on No 24. The front is finished in painted stucco, and the slate roof includes flat-roofed dormers that are partially concealed by the parapet. Each building has one window bay, with sash windows above set in reveals; however, the glazing bars are missing from No 28.

The ground floor has 19th-century shop fronts. No 26 has a larger shop window with two lights, flanked by panelled pilasters and a small window blind cover above. The doorway is located to the south, featuring a door set in reveals behind an architrave frame, with the original glazed door still intact. A fascia with a moulded top extends over both the shop window and the door.

No 28 features a three-light shop window with a moulded architrave frame, also flanked by pilasters. Its fascia has shaped ends and a moulded cornice above. The doorway is to the north, with an architrave frame flanked by moulded pilasters and a flat hood on shaped brackets above; the door is set in reveals and has a glazed upper part.

These buildings are part of a group that includes Nos 20, 24 to 32, the Baptist Church, gate piers and flanking walls, Town Mill, and No 3 Middlebridge Street.
