Description

The Cross Keys Public House, located at 11 Bell Street, is a building with two parallel ranges. The carriageway runs through both ranges at the north end. The back range is smaller, dating from the 17th century or earlier, and is timber-framed with a timber-framed wing extending westward along the yard. The front range, built in the early to mid-19th century, is three stories tall and finished in painted stucco. It features three bays with sash windows that lack glazing bars, set in reveals with slightly segmental arches and stuccoed voussoirs, each topped with central keystones. On the ground floor, there is one similar window to the south.

The doorway is located on the corner of the building, south of the carriageway, and consists of a pair of bow-fronted doors that follow the curve of the building. Each door has one flush panel below and glazing above, with a curved rectangular fanlight containing three lights.

In the east-west timber-framed wing at the back, there are square panels of timber-framing with some diagonal braces. This wing has three bays, with two-light casement windows above, two large sash windows below, and two doorways. The right-hand doorway features a door with flush panels set in reveals behind an architrave frame, topped with a flat hood on brackets. The left-hand doorway has a door with four fielded panels in reveals behind an architrave frame.

To the southwest of this structure, there is a tall single-storey extension from the 19th century, made of painted brick, which includes two round-headed windows and one doorway. The Cross Keys Public House is part of a group with Nos 3 to 15 (odd).
