Description
25 and 26 Meeting House Lane are houses that have been converted into shops, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The buildings feature stucco that has been scored to imitate ashlar on Nos 22, 23, and 24, as well as on the right return of No. 25 and the main elevation of No. 26. No. 25 has painted mathematical tiles on its first floor.
In terms of exterior details, Nos 22, 23, and 26 are three storeys high, while No. 25 has two storeys and a dormer, and No. 24 also has three storeys and a dormer. Nos 22 to 24 each have one window, while Nos 25 and 26 each have two windows. No. 24 features a gambrel roof covered with tiles, and No. 25 also has a tiled roof; the roofs of the others are not visible due to the narrowness of the street. No. 22 has been significantly rebuilt in the late 20th century, which includes a new shop front and windows designed in a late 19th-century style. No. 23 retains parts of a 19th-century shop front. Nos 24 and 25 have nearly identical late 19th-century shop fronts, although they have been largely rebuilt in the late 20th century; the projecting cornice and console brackets appear to be original. All windows are flat arched, with many featuring sashes of original design: No. 23 has 8 x 8 sashes on the first floor and 4 x 8 on the second; No. 24 has 6 x 6 sashes on both floors; No. 25 has a right-hand window with 8 x 8 sashes and a narrow architrave. No. 26 has been extensively rebuilt in the late 20th century, with a shop front designed in an early 19th-century style. All buildings, except No. 26, have guttered eaves, while No. 26 is topped by a parapet. The return of No. 26 has been recently rebuilt in a 19th-century style.
These buildings are part of an important group that includes Nos 1-12, 27-41, and 43-53 Meeting House Lane, which is located in the central area of the Old Town known as The Lanes.
