Description

49, 50, and 50A Meeting House Lane are houses that have been converted into shops. They date from the late 18th century or early 19th century, with shop fronts designed in the early to mid-19th century. The north elevation is finished in stucco that is scored to imitate ashlaring, while the treatment on the other elevation has been partly covered with rough cast. The roof is not visible due to the narrowness of Meeting House Lane.

The buildings are three storeys tall with a basement. Each has one window, and No. 50 has an additional window range on its west-facing return. All windows are flat arched. The ground floor of No. 49 features a shop front similar to those on Nos. 47 and 48 Meeting House Lane, dating to the mid-19th century. The first-floor window has 6 x 6 sashes of original design, and the second-floor window has 3 x 6 sashes; the third-floor window is not clearly visible. On the party wall, there is a flat-arched entrance to the upper floors of No. 50, which has the postal address 50A. The shop front entrance for No. 50 is located on the corner, set on a chamfer and flanked by a pair of Tuscan pilasters, with an entablature that runs continuously around the shop. This shop front is exceptionally tall, almost double height, with original glazing bars in the top section. The first-floor windows have mid-19th century 2 x 2 sashes, while the second-floor windows feature original early 19th-century 6 x 6 sashes. All windows have deep reveals and projecting sills, and both buildings have guttered eaves. The significant height of the shop front for No. 50 suggests it may have originally been built as a jeweller's shop.

The interior has not been inspected. These buildings are part of an important group with Nos. 1-12, 22-32, 36-41, 43-48, and 51-53 Meeting House Lane, which is located in the central area of the Old Town known as the Lanes.
