Description
No. 43 Meeting House Lane is a house that has been converted into a shop, dating from the 18th century. The ground floor is finished in stucco, while the first floor features weatherboarding, with a short right return in brick. The roof is tiled.
This two-storey building has a jettied first floor that ends in a gable facing the street. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. The jetty is supported by two joists at each end, with the right joist being bracketed. Inside the shop, the only original feature visible is an elliptical-arched doorcase leading to a rear room. Although there is a tradition that this structure dates back to the early 17th century, the visible elements suggest it is likely only slightly older than the other houses in this narrow passageway. An iron shop sign is mounted on the first floor.
This building contributes significantly to the character of Meeting House Lane and is part of an important group with Nos. 1-12, 22-32, 36-41, and 44-53 Meeting House Lane, which is located in the Old Town area known as The Lanes.
