Description
Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Meeting House Lane is a house that has been converted into shops, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. Originally built as a single house on a corner, the description will be organized by street addresses for clarity. The exterior features stucco that is scored to imitate ashlar, with a roof of tiles that is partly obscured by a parapet.
The building has two storeys with dormers and a three-window range on each elevation. All windows are flat arched. The ground floor of Nos. 1 and 2 has a 19th-century shop front, while the first-floor windows retain original 6 x 6 sash designs, and the dormer above has 3 x 3 sashes of original design. The shop front on the east-facing elevation wraps around the corner to the ground floor of No. 3. On the north-facing elevation, the left-hand window is positioned near the peak of the roof gable, while the next two windows feature original 12 x 12 sliding sash windows. Below these, near the party wall and just above the fascia of the shop front, there is a single shallow segmental bay with 6 x 6 sashes of original design. The arrangement of elements at the party wall is irregular, reflecting a change in interior levels.
Inside, the entire upper floor has been opened up to the roof and combined to create a shopping arcade. This building is part of an important group with Nos. 4-12, 22-32, 36-41, and 43-53 Meeting House Lane, which is located in the heart of the Old Town area known as The Lanes.
