36-40, Wellington Square

This building, numbers 36 to 40 Wellington Square, dates from the early 19th century. It is stuccoed with a rusticated ground floor. The upper floors feature pilasters. A parapet with recessed panels sits above each bay, topped by a cornice; number 37 has a decorated segmental pediment. The building comprises five storeys and a basement. A moulded string runs along the facade at the level of the fourth floor. It is ten windows wide. Most windows are sashes with glazing bars, although modern casements are present on the second and fourth floors of number 38, the second, third and fourth floors of number 39, and the second and third floors of number 40. Number 37 has a sash window with three lights on the third floor. All windows on the second floor are set within moulded architraves. On the first floor, there are recessed segmental bowed French windows with glazing bars, each with a decorative ironwork balcony supported by slender columns and tent-shaped canopies. The balconies of numbers 38, 39 and 40 are linked together. The ground floors have two round-headed sashes with glazing bars at number 36, a wide elliptically arched three-light sash with glazing bars and a fanlight at number 37, and large modern five-light mullion/transom windows at numbers 38, 39 and 40. Each ground floor is accessed by a round-headed doorway with a semicircular fanlight and panelled doors, with the doorways at numbers 36 and 38 now blocked. The railings to the basement area are also included in the listing. The listed buildings of Wellington Square are considered to form a group.
