Description
79 London Road is a detached Italianate villa, built in the mid-19th century as part of Eldon Square. It’s two storeys high with a basement, and features a two-and-a-half-storey gabled break to the right. The villa is constructed of stucco.
The façade has two bays. The windows are glazing bar sashes, except for those on the ground floor to the right. The right-hand bay has tripartite windows, with an arched window having moulded heads on the second floor, panelled mullions with a bracketed pediment and cill on the first floor, and panelled pilasters on the ground floor windows with scroll brackets to the pediment. A stone-bracketed cast iron balcony featuring a delicate oval, lozenge, and wreath pattern is located to the right. The left-hand bay has bracketed pediments to its windows, with ante-fixae; the ground-floor window has a balcony. A recessed entrance porch with a cornice and parapet is situated to the left, and a segment-headed garden entrance is set back to the right. The roof is slate with deep eaves and side chimneys. A dwarf wall runs along the street, topped with a moulded capping and flanked by cross-fabled gate piers approximately 5 feet high.
