Description

No. 2 Tilehurst Road is a large, detached stucco villa built before 1839. Originally known as Bellevue, it stands on a basement level and features two and a half stories. The front facade has three bays, with a prominent two-story, three-window canted bay in the center. This bay features round-headed windows on the ground floor, an open arcade extending down to the basement level, and a segmental attic window above. The villa has sash windows with glazing bars and cross glazing. A central break in the facade is higher, topped with a pediment gable formed by bracketed verges and eaves. The wings of the villa feature an impost string carried over the center, along with cornices and blacking courses, and are topped with elegant oval-shaped urns, possibly made of Coade stone. A flight of steps leads to the right-hand doorway, flanked by panels and featuring a radiating and wreathed fanlight. The roof is slate, with prominent, corniced chimney stacks. The north front is similar in design but grander, featuring a bullseye attic window and an arched recess with an urn above the center window.
