Description
Nos 40 and 42 Russell Street is an early to mid-19th century pair of buildings that rise three storeys above a basement. They are constructed of brick and feature a stone string course at the first floor level. Number 40 includes a stucco dividing panel and two courses of grey brick above the basement. The buildings have a moulded stucco cornice and a blocking course, which is accented by a raised shallow pediment in the centre. The slate roof covers three bays, each fitted with glazing bar sash windows. There is an arched doorway set in a deep stucco rusticated recess, with steps leading up to it and a patterned fanlight above. The first-floor windows are adorned with balconies that have contemporary cast iron railings featuring a 'honeysuckle' pattern. The two halves of the building are separated by spearhead rails.
