Description

No. 55 Baker Street is a building dating from around 1840 that has been altered. It stands three storeys tall and is finished in stucco, featuring a band above the ground floor, a small cornice, and a parapet with a shallow central pediment. The roof is covered with slate. The building has glazing bar sash windows, with the first floor windows having marginal glazing; there are two windows, including a flat segmental bay window on the first floor that has casements. The left window on the first floor has a moulded architrave with a cornice, while the ground floor windows have raised surrounds, architraves, and cornices. The ground floor also features a small arched door and a panel with two arched openings that have radiating and wreathed fanlights. A tablet on the wall indicates that this house was "Fox Talbot's Reading Establishment 1844-45." Notably, Nicholas Henneman, a pioneer photographer and associate of Fox Talbot, lived here.
