Description

27 Melville Street is a villa built around 1830 to 1840, which was enlarged in the mid-19th century and later. It is two storeys high and has a stucco facade. The roof is low-pitched and hipped, covered with slate, and there is a lean-to slate roof added over the front.

On the first floor, there are three recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars. The ground floor features a large projecting bay with a lead roof, consisting of five lights with glazing bars, alongside large fixed side windows also with glazing bars. A two-storey wing has been added to the west side.

The north garden front facing Bellevue Road has a frieze, cornice, and a parapet that returns on the side walls. The centre of the facade slightly projects, and the western side has one window. The main block has three windows with superimposed bays of three lights each on the east side, all sash with glazing bars, plain strips, and a cornice above the first-floor window. In the centre of the ground floor bay, there is a French window.

The western windows, including those in the wing, are recessed sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, the main block window featuring an architrave surround and block consoles under the sill. The ground floor also has French windows.

In the centre of the first floor, there is an original French window with marginal glazing bars, an architrave surround, and a pediment on scrolled consoles, which opens onto the roof of a rather crude Ionic porch with free-standing columns and a small pediment in the centre of the entablature. The entrance features a recessed panelled door with stained glass, set in an architrave surround.

This house was used by Queen Victoria's retinue during one of her earliest visits to the Isle of Wight. Nos 25 to 28 Melville Street, along with No 1 Trinity Street, form a group.
