Description
This is a villa dating from around the 1830s and 1840s. It is stucco-faced and has a low-pitched slate roof with wide eaves. The front of Melville Street has three windows, with a narrower window in the centre. These windows are recessed and have sash windows, with later glazing bars. They are surrounded by architraves and have block sills. Only one original window remains on the ground floor, to the east. A brick bay window has been added to the rest of the front at a later date, and a rendered brick screen wall with a string course and coping runs from this bay to the west party wall, incorporating a side entrance door. A narrow two-storey wing with a single window has also been added to the west.
The north-facing garden front, overlooking Bellevue Road, has three windows, with two arranged in a bow to the east, spanning both storeys. These also have sash windows with intact glazing bars, architraves, and block sills. The ground floor of the bow features French windows with marginal glazing bars, along with a later French window on the ground floor to the west. The added wing has a sash window with glazing bars on the first floor and a French window on the ground floor. The house was formerly used by members of Queen Victoria's retinue during an early visit to the Isle of Wight.
Nos 25 to 28, Melville Street, along with No 1 Trinity Street, form a notable group.
