Description
Nos 1 and 1A on Union Street date from around 1830 to 1840 and are located on a corner site with the Esplanade. The building has three storeys, with different levels due to the sloping site, and features a painted brick and stuccoed ground floor. The gable end and hipped slate roof curve around the corner, topped with a shallow eaves cornice.
On the Union Street side, the first floor has a flat fronted bow window with three lights, which are sash windows with glazing bars. This window is flanked by Tuscan pilasters, and there is an apron, frieze, and cornice that slightly project forward at the center. Other windows on the building are mostly recessed, with one blocked and one fixed window featuring a moulded frame. The remaining windows are sash with intact glazing bars, block sills, and flat brick arches.
The shop front of No 1A retains part of a mid-19th century frame with pilasters and a moulded cornice, and includes a small plate glass window. The corner section has three windows with recessed sashes, some of which have glazing bars. The center window on the second floor is blind, while the first floor has no glazing bars and features a full-length two-light transomed casement. The ground floor shop front frame is also from the mid-19th century, with pilasters, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. The upper part has two fixed windows with glazing bars and rounded corners to the panes. The central door is glazed, with a moulded lintel and a square fanlight above, set within a stepped surround.
Nos 1 and 1A form a group with No 1 Esplanade, and they are also part of a group with Nos 1 to 13 (consecutive) and No 15.
