Description

Nos 1 and 1A, formerly stables, are 18th-century buildings located on the east side of North Pallant. They are two storeys tall and feature five windows. The main building has a hipped tiled roof and is constructed of red brick. The central section, which projects slightly, has three windows and is topped with a pediment. The sash windows are set in reveals with flat arches, retaining their glazing bars, and are adorned with rubbed brick voussoirs. The entrance features a six-panel moulded double door with a rectangular and semi-circular fanlight above. The doorway is semi-circular arched, flanked by engaged Ionic columns with paterae, and topped with a rectangular pediment that has modillions.

No 1A, to the south, also dates from the 18th century and is slightly lower in height. It has a tiled gabled roof and a stuccoed façade with a small dentilled eaves cornice. This section now has three window bays, with modern sash windows on the first floor, also set in reveals with flat arches and intact glazing bars. The central window is taller and features a wrought iron balconette. On the ground floor, there is a modern bow window to the north, set in reveals with glazing bars and a cornice above. The central doorway has a six-panelled door in reveals, with a fluted frame and cornice above. There is a passageway at the southern end of the house, which has a segmental arch, with the upper part glazed and modern wrought iron gates below.

Nos 1 to 7 and No 9 form a group.
