Description
Nos 9 and 10 on South Street are early 19th-century buildings with a stuccoed front. They stand three storeys tall, with No 10 having a higher frontage than No 8. Both buildings feature a continuous pediment-shaped panelled parapet, a dentilled cornice, and a stringcourse.
No 9 has two window bays with sash windows set in reveals under flat arches, and the glazing bars are intact. In contrast, No 10 has three window bays, with its windows positioned higher and not aligned with those of No 9. The second-floor windows have segmental arches, while the first-floor windows have flat arches, all retaining their glazing bars. The centre window on the first floor features arcading with a stuccoed garland in the tympanum. The ground floor has 20th-century plate-glass shop fronts.
No 9 is an 18th-century building with a west front made of flint and brick lacing courses, featuring two window bays with sash windows in slightly segmental headings and brick dressings. There is one modern window on the first floor and a 20th-century projection on the ground floor.
No 10, likely built in the early 19th century, also has three storeys and a higher ridge line with a slate gabled roof. It is constructed of red brick with grey headers alternately. The southern end has a projection containing the southernmost window bay, with slate hung above on the second and first floors. This section includes two sash windows in reveals under slightly segmental arches with rubbed brick voussoirs, and all glazing bars are intact. The ground floor features a larger sash window at the south end in a deeper segmental arch, while a smaller semi-circular window opening towards the north is now covered by a wooden shutter.
Vicar's Hall and Crypt with Canon Gate and Nos 8 to 25 form a group with these buildings.
