Description
1 and 1A High Street is a building that dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It stands three storeys tall and features five windows. The exterior is finished in yellow brick or mathematical tiles, complemented by rusticated stone quoins. The eaves cornice and entablature include an architrave with brackets that support the roof. The upper storey windows have moulded stone sills that are supported by moulded brackets, and there is a moulded string course at the sill height. The middle storey windows are adorned with shouldered stone architraves, with the central window featuring a pediment.
The building has 19th-century sash windows that retain their original glazing bars. A stone moulded cornice at the ground floor extends over the protruding side rusticated quoins. A balcony above the central doorway is enclosed by a stone balustrade. The protruding doorway is framed by a rusticated stone arch and has a flat hood supported by three heavy stone brackets, which forms the balcony floor. The panelled door includes a semi-circular fanlight and some decorative ironwork. On either side of the main entrance, there are 19th-century double shop fronts with pilasters.
Additionally, there is a wing on the northeast side that was originally a separate building. This wing is from the 18th century, stands two storeys tall, and has two windows. It features a tiled roof, with weatherboarding on the upper storey and painted brick on the lower storey. The upper floor has sash windows, with the northern window retaining its original glazing bars. The ground floor has modern display windows and entrance doors. No 1A is part of the same building as the main block of No 1, and its doorway features an entablature with a cornice and moulded architrave.
