Description

The building at 2 Castle Street dates to circa 1840. It is a two-storey stucco building with a slate gable roof concealed behind a parapet, the coping of which is stepped up in the centre and features a moulded cornice. A moulded string course runs between the two storeys. The building has two mid-19th century bay windows, each with three lights, featuring later sash windows with glazing bars, plain strips, a frieze, and a cornice, as well as panelled aprons. On the ground floor, a recessed door with four fielded panels is located to the west, above which is a semicircular plate glass fanlight with splayed reveals. To the west of the door are recessed double doors and a large two-light window flanked by Tuscan pilasters supporting a plain frieze and a moulded cornice. A narrow recessed window is situated to the east. A small rendered plinth is present at the base. The building is part of a group with numbers 1, 1A, 2A Union Street.
