Description
No. 3 The Esplanade is a building dating from around 1840 to 1850. It has three storeys and is faced with stone rubble that mimics brickwork. The ground floor features rendered, decorative quoins. Above this, there is a plain frieze that is flanked by paired capped brackets, a modillion cornice, and a blocking course topped with a small, solid, panelled pediment that is flanked by scrolls.
On the second floor, there is a tripartite recessed window with sash and later glazing bars, a block sill supported by consoles, and a rendered moulded surround. The first floor has a flat-fronted bow window with three lights, also with sash and later glazing bars, pilasters, a frieze, and a dentil cornice that slightly projects forward, along with a panelled apron. The building features an early 20th-century shop front.
No. 1 and Nos. 3 to 14 on The Esplanade form a group.
