Description

No 81 on Union Street is a three-storey building likely built around the same time as its neighbors. It features a red brick facade with grey headers and a rendered plinth. The low-pitched hipped slate roof is concealed by a rendered parapet and has a moulded cornice.

On the Union Street side, there are three recessed windows that have been altered to casements, with the northern window enlarged and featuring a mullioned and transomed design of four leaded lights. The windows have flat ganged brick arches and block sills. The mid-19th century shop front has broad Doric pilasters, a frieze, and a modillion cornice, with later glazing in the windows except for the last bay at the corner, which retains a sash window with four large panes, the upper ones having rounded corners. The shop door is positioned at the corner, beneath the right angle of the cornice and frieze, and is flanked by pilasters with a rectangular fanlight above.

The shop front extends onto Pier Street for one bay, where the window matches the end bay on Union Street but includes panelled risers. The northern facade on Pier Street has three windows similar to those on Union Street, though the rest have been altered to feature superimposed canted bays on the first and second floors, with enlarged mullioned and transomed leaded casements on the west side. The last bay on the west may be a later addition. There is an entrance next to the shop front on this side, which has a recessed panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight, a stepped surround, and is flanked by Doric pilasters with a rendered architrave and a large keystone above.
