Description
No. 23 Market Street is a house and shop dating from the early 19th century, which underwent significant restoration in 1992. The building features mathematical tiles and has a two-span slate roof. It stands three storeys tall with a basement and has a two-window range, with all openings being flat arched. The first-floor windows were originally floor-to-ceiling but were shortened during the restoration, when cast-iron railings in an early 19th-century design were added in front of the spandrels. The sashes were rebuilt to reflect a late 18th or early 19th-century style. The rear elevation was originally covered in mathematical tiles, which were painted; during the restoration, these tiles were removed from the rear, which faced a court, and relocated to the front. Prior to the restoration, the rear elevation featured several original design sashes, a canted bay on the first floor, and multiple dormers. The interior has not been inspected.
