Description

This is an early to mid-19th century corner house, now used as a restaurant and offices. A shop front was inserted in the late 19th century. The building is stuccoed, with a brick shop front, and has a roof hidden by a parapet.

The exterior is four storeys high, with a curved corner forming a one-window range. It has a three-window range facing Market Street and a five-window range facing Bartholomews. A flat-arched entrance is set into the corner and incorporated into the later 19th-century shop front, set within a segmental-arched niche topped by a decorative scrolled gable featuring masks and acanthus scrolls. A continuous dentil cornice runs across the top of the shop front, and each shop window is framed by panelled piers ornamented with strapwork. The elliptical-arched entrance to the Bartholomews elevation has spandrels decorated with floral sprays. Above the windows, flat arches are present; those on the second and third floors have moulded, projecting sills. Moulded bands separate each upper floor and run across the top. An entablature is topped by a dentil cornice. Many of the windows retain their original sash designs. In the corner, windows on the second and third floors are six-paned sashes. The Market Street elevation has a six-paned sash in the third-floor window of the first range. The Bartholomews elevation includes varying sash arrangements, including six-pane top sashes, and 3x6-pane sashes. A fire in June 1992 damaged some of the Bartholomews windows, which are now blocked. Other blocked windows are located on Market Street. Stacks are situated near the corner on the exterior wall. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing assessment.
