Description
This corner building, now a restaurant, shops, and offices, was constructed in the 19th century, and incorporates the address formerly known as No. 24 Prince Albert Street. The building is stucco-faced and has a roof largely hidden by a parapet.
The main facade, facing Market Street, has five windows, while the return elevation to Prince Albert Street has two windows, and the Nile Street return has one. The ground floor features shop fronts with Tuscan pilasters and piers, an entablature (the detail to No. 41 now obscured), and sections of banded and chamfered rustication on the right return. Numerous flat-arched entrances are present, including one at the corner to Prince Albert Street, one centrally on the Market Street elevation, and another to Nile Street. All windows are flat-arched, with projecting sills, except for the bay windows. The corner where Prince Albert Street meets Market Street has a curved plan, is set back slightly, and features a vertical panel intended for signage, now blank. A continuous entablature runs along the top of the entire block.
The Prince Albert Street elevation features two canted bays with tripartite windows on the first and second floors. Above the left-hand bay is a single window on the third floor, and above the right-hand bay are three closely-spaced windows. The original window design is evident in some sashes: 8x8 panes in the first-floor window of the first window range, and in all second-floor windows. The Market Street elevation has two segmental bay windows on the first and second floors. Some windows are blocked and very narrow. Storey bands are located between the first and second floors, and a continuous projecting cornice is situated between the second and third floors. Original sash windows, with 6x6 panes to the first-floor window in the first-window range, 6x6 panes to the tripartite bay windows, 6x6 panes to the central windows, and 2x2 panes to the sides, are present. Windows on the upper floors also retain the original 6x6 designs. The Nile Street elevation has a canted bay to the first floor with original 8x8 pane sashes in the centre window and 2x2 panes on either side, along with three windows on the second and third floors. The first and second window ranges are blocked. Stacks are visible on the end and party walls. The interior has not been inspected.
