Description

These are three late 18th-century houses on Nile Street, Brighton. They were originally built using brick or possibly mathematical tile in a Flemish bond pattern, with some areas rendered in stucco scored to imitate ashlar. The roofs are tiled, and the houses are two storeys and an attic, with a basement beneath. Each house originally had one window facing the street.

Number 2 and Number 3 have been altered in the 20th century, and Number 2A, known as Nile Cottage, has undergone significant changes. The shop front of Number 3 dates from the 19th century. The first-floor windows of all three houses are tripartite, meaning they have three sections, with flat arches and original sash windows; the centre section has 6 panes, and the side sections have 2. Each house has a dormer window in the attic, although the dormer on Number 3 is now blocked. The stucco scoring is difficult to see on the facades, and the stucco facing has been removed from the centre and left side of Number 2.

Number 3 retains its original staircase, although only the first set of risers and railings remain. A small, square window opening is visible in the top right corner of Number 2, representing the remaining evidence of a previously blocked window. The interiors have not been inspected.
