Description

17 and 17A Prince Albert Street are terraced houses that have been converted into shops and flats. They were built in the early 19th century and feature a stucco exterior with a return to Nile Street that has cobbles and red brick dressings. The roof is obscured by a parapet. The building has three storeys above a basement and a four-window range, with scattered fenestration on the return. The plan is triangular with a rounded corner at the intersection of the two streets.

There are remnants of late 19th-century shop fronts on the ground floor, alongside 20th-century insertions. Above, there are four identical two-storey segmental bays that are regularly spaced and stop just short of a plain entablature band. All windows are tripartite and flat arched, with some original sash designs: the centre windows have a 6/6 configuration, while the side windows of the first-floor bays in the first, second, and fourth-window ranges have a 4/4 pattern. The same window patterns are present in the second-floor bays of the second and fourth-window ranges. The stucco facing features an entablature that has a short return to Nile Street, where the facing changes to cobbles with brick dressings, and the windows are segmental arched, although some near the corner are blocked. There are chimney stacks on the party wall and in the centre. The interior has not been inspected.
