Description
This property comprises three late 18th-century terraced houses, now used as shops and offices, located on Prince Albert Street in Brighton. The houses are constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with mathematical tiles in the bay spandrels, and the ground floors are stuccoed. The roofs are tiled, with the roof of number 13 obscured by a parapet.
The three houses present three storeys, each with two windows. Each unit has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters; the capitals to the pilasters on number 13 have been removed. Number 11 has an additional half pilaster at the left party wall. A continuous entablature runs along the ground floors, with a banded, chamfered rustication below, pierced by a flat-arched window in each unit. The ground-floor cornice projects to form a soffit under a two-storey bay on each of the three units. The bays of numbers 11 and 12 are segmental, featuring tripartite, flat-arched windows. Number 12’s original windows are 6/6 pane sashes in the central window and 4/4 pane sashes to the sides. This unit also has a window range to the right of this bay, above the entrance; the first floor window is camber arched and the second has 4/4 pane sashes of original design. The bay of number 13 is rectangular and was rebuilt in the late 19th or early 20th century. An entablature with a dentil cornice is present on all three units, matching the detailing on number 10 Prince Albert Street. The parapets are covered in cement. The join between numbers 10 and 11 is slightly offset, with the front wall of number 11 projecting slightly beyond number 10. A straight join exists between numbers 12 and 13. Recent repointing has been carried out on number 12, while the upper half of the second floor of number 11 has been harshly cleaned and repointed. The interior of the properties has not been inspected. Number 13 is included in the listing primarily for group value, as it is the most significantly altered of the three. Numbers 11 and 12 were originally listed on 20 August 1971.
