Description
No. 15B on Prince Albert Street in Brighton is a shop building dating from the 1890s. It is constructed of terracotta, with a return of brick in stretcher bond, and features a roof that is obscured by a parapet. The building is a single storey and retains its original front elevation. The facade is divided into three bays, with two large display windows flanking a flat-arched entrance that is paved with mosaic tile. The wooden glazing bars and transoms follow an original design. Above the entrance, there is a frieze of an entablature that displays the shop name, topped by a continuous cornice.
The front is framed by a terracotta structure of pilasters, entablature, and parapet. Each pilaster features recessed panels decorated with strapwork, and at the top, a fluted bracket supports a capital made from egg-and-dart moulding. A dentil cornice runs continuously across the front. Above each shop, there is a balustrade that is interrupted by two panelled socles, with thicker socles positioned above each pilaster that divides the shops. The parapet returns to No. 15 Prince Albert Street, obscuring the ground-floor corner quoining of that building. This shop is noted for its distinguished design and strong group value. It is worth mentioning that the adjacent shop numbered 15C, which is not included in this listing, appears to be a late 20th-century reproduction in artificial stone of the original design. The interior of No. 15B has not been inspected.
