Description

Nos. 20, 21, 21A, and 21B on Prince Albert Street in Brighton are terraced houses that date back to the early 19th century and have since been converted into flats. Shops were added around 1840. The buildings are finished in stucco, and their roofs are obscured by a blocking course. They rise three storeys over a basement and feature a four-window range across the block, which may have originally been built as a pair of houses aligned parallel to Nile Street to the north. The single-storey shop fronts are oriented differently, following the line of the street.

The tall block is treated as a single unit. The first-floor windows are large, reaching from floor to ceiling, and have original sashes designed in a 6 x 9 pattern. Some windows in the right-hand range are blocked, including the second-floor window in the second window range. A storey band separates the first and second floors, and there is a projecting cornice that runs continuously across the top of the block. The single-storey shop fronts were originally framed by Tuscan pilasters, although these have suffered significant damage, with the pilaster at No. 21A being the most intact.

The interior has not been inspected. This range of buildings forms a group with Nos. 2-8 Prince Albert Street.
