Description

The Pump House Tavern is a group of buildings that now serve as shops and a tavern, located on Market Street in Brighton. The front of the building dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century, though the structure may be older. It has been restored since 1980 and features mathematical tiles and stucco on the short right return, with a tiled roof.

The building is two storeys high with a basement, and each of the three sections has one window. The ground floor of each section has a full-width, segmental-bay shop front. The original glazing bars and spandrels were removed during a recent restoration. Each bay is framed by Tuscan pilasters that support a continuous entablature with a modillioned cornice across all three shops. There is a tripartite window on the first floor of each section, with the window for No. 44 being a reproduction of an original late 18th or early 19th-century design. All openings are flat arched, and there is a low parapet with metal coping. Each section has one roof dormer and a single entrance to the return. The brick stack on the left wall of No. 44 has been largely rebuilt in the late 20th century, and there is another stack in the end wall of No. 46, with a parapet wall extending to the rear half of the building.

The name "The Pump House" has been associated with this site since at least 1776 and may originate from a town well that was located nearby, now known as Brighton Place.
