Description
No. 11 Market Street is a corner house that has been converted into shops. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, or possibly covered with mathematical tile, while the left return features stucco scored to imitate ashlaring. The gable on the right return is made of irregularly laid flints with brick lacing courses. The roof is tiled.
The building has two storeys and a dormer, with a three-window range. The main elevation features an elliptical-arched entrance at the center, with jambs designed as half Tuscan pilasters and an outer architrave with a keyed lintel. This entrance is framed by an aedicule that includes a pair of Tuscan columns supporting an entablature block and a pediment formed only by a raking cornice. At the corner, there is a 19th-century shop front that has been significantly altered, and to the right, there is a 20th-century polygonal bay that lacks distinction. All first-floor windows are flat-arched with projecting sills, and there is an entablature across the main elevation. A single 20th-century flat-arched dormer is located in the center of the roof, and there is a brick stack on the right end wall that has been largely rebuilt in the 20th century. The interior has not been inspected.
