Description

No. 35 East Street is a house dating from the 18th century, which was refronted in the early to mid 19th century. The exterior is finished in stucco that mimics ashlar stone, with the right side featuring painted cobbles and a brick chimney breast. The house has a half-hipped roof over the front section, with its long axis perpendicular to the front wall, and a smaller roof at the rear, both covered in tiles.

The building stands three storeys over a basement and has a two-window range. The refronting gives it the appearance of a Regency terraced house, with the second storey projecting above the original eaves line and ending in a horizontal parapet that conceals the half-hipped roof from the front. The right return reveals elements of the original 18th-century house, including cobbles, windows with brick dressings, and a brick dentil cornice. This cornice is also present on the other return, where there is a flat-arched entrance leading into the rear wing, facing East Street. All windows are flat-arched, featuring early to mid 19th-century sashes: 8/8 for the first-floor windows and 6/6 sliding sashes for the second floor, with 20th-century shutters. A 20th-century dormer is located on the rear section. Notably, the shop front is Italianate in style and dates from the mid 19th century.

The surrounding area includes Nos 26-31 and 33-36 East Street, which collectively form a small square created by the widening of East Street at its northern end. Local legend suggests that this group of buildings was constructed on the site of a small wharf on an inlet of the sea.
