Description

Number 28 is a terraced house that has been converted into shops, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. The shop front was added around 1835, and an extra storey was added in the late 19th century. The building is finished in stucco and has a hipped roof covered with slate.

The exterior features three storeys and an attic above a basement, with a single-window range. The ground floor is dominated by a segmental-bay shop front from the early to mid 19th century, with all openings having flat arches. On the first floor, there are French doors leading to a tripartite opening, which open onto a shallow balcony surrounded by cast-iron railings with a fret and anthemion pattern. The sashes of the doors include margin lights and are designed in an early to mid 19th-century style, featuring a 4-pane transom, 3-pane French doors, and 3-pane sidelights. The second-floor window has been extended and now intersects with the entablature that separates the second and attic floors, with the attic being a late 19th-century addition. Above the entrance, there is an iron sign bracket from the late 19th or early 20th century. A curved stair of original design runs from the ground to the second floor.

Number 28, along with Nos 26-31 and 33-36 East Street, faces a small square created by the widening of East Street at its northern end. It is said that this group of buildings was constructed on the site of a small wharf by an inlet.
