Description
No. 31 East Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and features a gambrel roof covered with tiles. The building has two storeys and a dormer above a basement, with a single-window range. The ground floor has a 19th-century shop front, while the first floor includes a canted bay with tripartite, flat-arched windows. The windows have sashes designed in the early 19th century, with the central window having a lower sash of eight panes and the side windows featuring four-over-four sashes. There is also one flat-arched dormer with six-over-six sashes, reflecting the early 19th-century style. A brick dentil cornice adorns the shallow, guttered eaves. The interior has not been inspected. Nos. 26-31 and 33-36 East Street face a small square formed by the widening of East Street at its northern end. According to local legend, this entire group of buildings was constructed on the site of a small wharf that extended into an inlet from the sea.
