Description

BRIGHTON

TQ3104SW EAST STREET 577-1/64/222 (South side) 20/08/71 Nos.26 AND 27 (Formerly Listed as: EAST STREET Nos.26-31 (Consecutive))

II

House, now shops and offices. Late C18 or early C19. Stucco. Hipped roof of slate rebuilt in C20. 3 storeys. The building sits on the west side of East Street on the south corner where the street widens to form the small square in front of Nos 28-31 and 33-36 (qv). Both elevations have a 3-window range. All windows flat arched with architraves, those to second floor have projecting sills moulded as a modillioned cornice. The ground floor is taken up with a shop front built since 1980. The second- and third-window ranges of the elevation on East Street proper are blocked. There is early C20 stained glass in all upper-floor sashes except for the centre-window range on the elevation to the square. INTERIOR: not inspected. Nos 26-31 and 33-36 East Street (qv) face onto what is, in effect, a small square, which is formed by the widening of East Street at its northern end. Legend has it that this group was built on the site of a small wharf of an inlet.
