Description
26 and 27 East Street is a house that has been converted into shops and offices. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and is constructed of stucco. The building features a hipped slate roof that was rebuilt in the 20th century. It stands three storeys tall on the west side of East Street, at the south corner where the street widens to create a small square in front of Nos 28-31 and 33-36.
Both elevations of the building have a three-window range, with all windows being flat arched and framed with architraves. The second-floor windows have projecting sills that are moulded to resemble a modillioned cornice. The ground floor is occupied by a shop front that was added after 1980. The second and third window ranges on the elevation facing East Street are blocked. Early 20th-century stained glass can be found in all upper-floor sash windows, except for the central window range on the square elevation.
The group of buildings, including Nos 26-31 and 33-36, face a small square formed by the widening of East Street at its northern end. According to local legend, this group was built on the site of a small wharf of an inlet.
