Description

16-20, 24, and 26 George Street are houses that have been converted into shops and offices. They were built in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and late 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with stucco dressings and feature a slate roof.

The eaves cornice is wooden, dentillated, and has blocking. Each floor has raised panels with swags of oak leaves below the windows. The buildings are three storeys high and have a total of nine windows across the front. Most windows have painted brick flat arches.

The entrance bay is off-centre and features a 12-pane sash window, with the lower light reglazed, set in a moulded surround. To the right of the entrance bay are three similar windows, while to the left are five plain sash windows. The panels below these windows have been renewed. Above the entrance bay is a plain sash window with a raised surround, flanked on the right by three 6-pane sashes and on the left by five plain sashes. The second-floor windows are smaller than those on the first floor.

The ground floor includes an off-centre round-arched entrance with a cast-iron fanlight grille, and there are late 20th-century shop fronts on either side.
