Description

39 and 41 Castlegate are two houses that have been converted into shops and flats. They date from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid and late 19th century and the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of brick with a colourwashed gable and ground floor, featuring stone dressings and a slate roof. Architectural details include an incomplete first floor band, a second floor band, moulded dentillated eaves, a single coped gable, and both ridge and gable stacks.

The structure has three storeys and a three-window range of glazing bar sashes, with three smaller similar sashes above, all topped with flat arches. The central entrance features a reeded stone doorcase with a dentillated cornice supported by curved brackets, a six-panel door, and a fanlight. To the left, there is a late 19th-century rusticated stucco shopfront with an enriched cornice and a pilastered corner doorcase, leading to a two-leaf door with glazing bar top panels. Next to it is a two-light shop window. To the right, there is a late 19th-century wooden shopfront with a cornice, which has been reglazed in the late 20th century. The left gable facing Stodman Street features a four-light display window with a cornice. Below this, to the right, is another rusticated stucco shopfront with pilasters and a cornice adorned with swags, a two-light window with an eared architrave and toplights, and to its left, a small casement window.
