Description
Two houses at 14 and 16 Castlegate, Newark on Trent, dating from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th and mid 20th centuries. The houses are built of brick with stone dressings and have a slate roof. They feature bands at the first and second floor levels, coped gables, and four gable stacks plus one ridge stack. The buildings are three storeys high, with an eight-window range on each floor. The upper floors contain glazing bar sashes, while the ground floor has a mix of sashes and a larger sash window to the left. All ground floor windows are topped with brick flat arches. The left-hand side has a moulded wooden doorcase with a hood and a fielded six-panel door with an overlight. To the right of this is a pair of sashes, with a larger sash to its left. The right-hand side features a similar doorcase with a 20th-century door and lattice overlight, flanked by single 20th-century, large, glazing bar bow windows. The left gable has a segmental-headed casement window on each floor and a plain doorcase with a fielded six-panel door and overlight. The right gable has a chamfered corner with a round-headed glazing bar sash on the first floor, sheltered by an arched brick canopy. Below this sash is a round-headed glazing bar window that replaced a former door. To the right of this is a segmental-headed, margin-light sash to the second floor and a similar sash to the ground floor. A rear wing on the right-hand side also contains segmental-headed windows on each floor.
