Description
48 and 48A Market Street is a house that has been converted into shops, dating from the late 18th century. The exterior is finished in stucco that has been scored to imitate ashlar, and the roof is tiled. The building has two storeys along the north side of Market Street, with one window on each storey. The south elevation of No. 48, which faces a small square created by the curve of Market Street, features three storeys and a single-window range. This elevation has only half of a facing gable; on the left side, the upper floor is squared off to create a parapet for the party wall. The ground floors have shop fronts, each with an entrance, and all openings are flat arched. The first floor has casement windows that date from the 20th century. The semi-gable front of No. 48 includes a canted bay with tripartite windows on the first floor and another window on the top floor. There is a stack on the party wall. The interior has not been inspected.
