Description
No. 47 Market Street is a lock-up building dating from the mid to late 19th century. It features English bond construction with red brick stretchers and blue brick headers, along with brick and stone dressings, which are now painted. The hipped roof, which has tile gablets, has been modified.
The building is two storeys high, with a two-window range facing Market Street and a one-window range on the return to Brighton Place. It is designed in a High Victorian Gothic style, with an asymmetrical massing that enhances its prominent corner location. Near the corner on the Brighton Place side, there is a simply rebated, pointed-arched entrance. At the rear, there is a segmental-arched entrance where the elevation steps down. The single window between the entrances is also segmental-arched, featuring stone lintels and a pointed brick relieving arch, with a gabled half dormer above.
On the south-facing elevation to Market Place, there is a similar window near the corner, and to the right, a narrower window of the same type. This side also has a gabled half dormer with two windows sharing a single relieving arch. A brick buttress with a single stone setback is located at the party wall with No. 48. Both elevations have a simple brick plinth, and the eaves cornice consists of two rows of bricks set edgewise. The interior has not been inspected.
