Description

Numbers 12 to 18 Dorset Gardens comprise a row of late 18th-century terraced houses. The construction is largely stucco, with number 15 faced in cobbles and having painted brick dressings and quoin strips, and number 17 displaying painted brick quoin strips. Roofs are tiled on numbers 12 and 14 to 18, and slate on number 12A.

The houses are three storeys high with dormers, set above a half basement. Most have a single-window range, except for number 16, which has two. A flat-arched entrance with decorative glazing bars is found at numbers 12A and 14, framed by Tuscan order pilasters with brackets supporting a porch formed from raking cornices. Numbers 12, 15, and 18 feature continuous pilaster strips that swell into brackets supporting similar porches. The entrance to number 16 is particularly elaborate, with a round arch, plain archivolts, and a fanlight of decorative glazing, supported by panelled pilasters and volute brackets. A canted bay with tripartite windows is present at numbers 12A and 16, the latter supporting a first-floor balcony currently under restoration. Number 17 features a full-height canted bay with tripartite windows. Otherwise, most ground-floor windows to the right of the entrance are tripartite. Number 16 has a single first- and second-floor window above its entrance. All windows are flat-arched, except for the camber-arched ground- and first-floor windows of number 15. The ground floor of number 18 has banded, chamfered rustication and a storey band between the first and second floors. Numbers 12A, 14, and 18 have a cornice and parapet, numbers 12 and 17 have a parapet only, and numbers 15 and 16 have a blocking course. Each house has one flat-arched dormer. Stacks are located at the party walls. Cast-iron flower guards are positioned at the ground floor windows of numbers 15 and 16. The interior has not been inspected.
