Description
A terrace of 21 houses built in the late 18th century, located on Kennington Park Road, Southwark. The houses are constructed of brown and yellow stock brick, with some stucco or red brick dressings. Numbers 147, 131-3, and 149 have painted ground floors, number 129 has a stucco ground floor, while number 125 has a stucco cornice and blocking course. Most houses have slate or tiled roofs behind brick parapets. Numbers 135 and 137 are the exceptions. Dormers are present in the mansard roofs of all but numbers 135 and 137. War damage has been repaired, with subsequent restoration and alterations undertaken.
Each house generally has three storeys and a basement, with attics except for number 165, which has four storeys and a basement. They are arranged as two-bay units, each with two windows and a ground floor entrance door, except at numbers 125, 131-137, which have attached extensions. Number 125 has a two-storey, two-bay extension to the left, and numbers 131-137 feature two-storey, one-bay extensions to both the left (numbers 131 and 135) and right (numbers 133 and 137).
Entrance doors are set within round-arched recesses, with decorative fanlights at numbers 125, 127, 131, 139-145, 151, 153, and 157. Number 125 has a doorcase featuring reeded, attached three-quarter Tuscan columns, a reeded cornice, and the original door. Numbers 127 and 133 have stucco Gibbs surrounds with vermiculated blocks to the door with a moulded cornice head; number 127 also has pilaster jambs. Numbers 129 and 133 have wooden pilaster jambs to the door with a moulded cornice head. Number 131 has a double door beneath a decorated segmental fanlight with reeded quadrant pilasters, a cornice head, and impost blocks with anthemion mouldings. Numbers 135 and 137 feature plain doorways with stucco imposts and doors with cornice heads, with the door to number 137 being original. Numbers 139, 141, and 151 have doors with moulded cornices in stucco surrounds with a keystone. Number 143 has a door in a stucco surround with fluted pilaster jambs and a cornice head. Number 147 has a stucco Gibbs surround to the door with a cornice head and imposts. Numbers 149, 161, and 163 feature doors with moulded cornice heads, the door to number 163 having fluted pilaster jambs. Numbers 153-159 have doors with detached, reeded columns and moulded cornice heads. Number 165 has a door with a damaged stucco architrave, plain jambs and cornice head.
Windows generally have flat, gauged-brick arches, and are sash windows, except at numbers 127 and 133 which have casements, and numbers 105-107 which have modern glazing. Glazing bars are present at numbers 125, 129, 131, 139, 147, 151, 153 and 165. Number 125 has round-arched windows within round-arched recesses, while numbers 131 and 133 have shallow segmental, gauged-brick arches to the first- and second-floor windows. Stucco sill bands are present on the first floor, with a second-floor stucco sill band to number 127. A moulded modillion cornice sits above the second floor of number 165. Original decorative Victorian blind boxes (circa 1850) are present on the ground, first, and second floors of number 165, and also on the ground floor of number 143. The interior was not inspected. Original area and/or dividing railings remain as subsidiary features.
