Description
The railings and retaining wall to the park in Dorset Gardens, Brighton, date from the late 19th century. The railings are made of cast iron, while the wall is constructed from flint and cement. Most of the vertical uprights are circular in shape and topped with conical spearheads. Every 16th upright is larger, square in shape, and also features a spearhead top, each supported by a scroll bracket anchored in a buttress on the park side of the wall. There are horizontal runners above the wall and just below the tops of the uprights, with shorter spiked uprights positioned between each full upright. The structure includes four gates, with the stanchions of each being square in section, adorned with studded bosses and a studded spear top. The gates located opposite Nos 11, 14, and 19-20 are intended for pedestrians, while the remaining gate is wider and designed for vehicles. This structure is included for its historical and group value.
