Description
No. 161 Edward Street is a terraced house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the early 19th century, with the ground floor transformed into a public house in the mid to late 19th century. The exterior features mathematical tiles and brick in Flemish bond, which is painted, along with stucco on the ground floor and return. The roof is tiled.
The building has two storeys above a basement, with one flat-arched dormer, while the return section has three storeys over the basement. The main elevation has a three-window range, and the return has a two-window range. There are two flat-arched entrances with overlights for the public house; one is located at the corner, and the other is in the center of the main elevation. On either side of the central entrance, there are rectangular bays with flat-arched windows. These bays and entrances are framed by Tuscan pilasters, with the area between them panelled. The spandrel fronts of the center window in the bays are also panelled. The corner entrance is framed by paired Tuscan pilasters. In the return, next to the corner entrance, there are three bays similar to those on the main elevation.
Above the public house front, the original elevation is visible. In the center of the first floor, there is a camber-arched window with gauged brick lintels, and on either side, aligned with the ground-floor bay, are segmental bays of mathematical tile featuring tripartite, flat-arched windows. All first-floor windows have sashes of original design, and there is a parapet with plain coping above. The first floor of the return has flat-arched windows, one of which near the corner is blocked, along with a similar window in the gable of the gambrel roof. The upper floor windows, as well as the parapet coping and end wall stacks, have continuous architraves. The window architraves are chamfered with run-out stops near the corners. There are stacks at the end and party walls.
The interior of the public house has undergone significant alterations.
