Description

Numbers 34 to 39 Bedford Square are a group of early 19th-century terraced houses. They are built of stucco with slate roofs. The houses are four storeys high with a basement, and have dormers. Numbers 34 and 35 have flat-arched entrances with overlights, with Number 34 retaining a panelled door of original design. The entrance to Number 36 has been altered to a window. Numbers 37 and 39 have pointed-arched entrances. Number 37 has decorative glazing to the fanlight, and Number 38 has a round-arched entrance flanked by fluted pilasters, with a wreath above the arch and panelled doors of original design.

The houses generally have full-height bays with flat-arched, tripartite windows, which are offset to the right on the upper floors except for Number 34. The ground floor windows are segmental, while the upper floors are canted, except for Number 38, which is canted throughout. Bracketed verandahs with cast-iron railings are present on the first floor. Giant pilasters are on the first and second floors of numbers 34 to 36, although parts are missing on Number 34. Number 39 features recessed rectangular panels to the first and second floors, some of which are missing. Number 37 has panelling on the spandrels of the bay and a bracketed sill band. A secondary cornice and blocking course are present to the third floor. The roof is of mansard design, with dormers, and there are stacks to the party walls.

The interior was not inspected. Cast-iron railings with spearhead and other finials are located at the steps and area.
