Description
The War Memorial at Waltham Forest Town Hall, dating from 1922, is a free-standing stone structure dedicated to those who fell in the First World War, with later inscriptions honoring the Second World War and subsequent conflicts.
The memorial has a rectangular shape and features a stepped plinth topped with a neo-classical canopy supported by four Ionic columns. These columns hold up an entablature that includes a dentilled cornice. Inside the canopy is a tablet inscribed with the words ‘OUR / GLORIOUS / DEAD / “LEST WE FORGET” / 1914-1918 / 1939-1945', above which is a low relief moulded heraldic shield and foliation. At the base of the tablet, there is a plaque that reads 'IN MEMORY OF / THE FALLEN OF WALTHAMSTOW / 1945 TO THE PRESENT DAY'. Additionally, a sculpture of a mourning woman dressed in classical robes stands on the stepped base, leaning on the plinth with her head bowed.
