Description
Marton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is located in an enclosed area at the center of the village on Silver Street.
The memorial is made from Stainton limestone and features a Latin cross with a two-stepped foot. A small wreath is carved in relief on the front (north) face of the cross-head. The cross stands on a tall, square plinth that tapers at the top and has a square block foot with a moulded top. This is set on a single-step stone base, which is placed atop a stone block with rounded corners. All names and inscriptions are presented in raised leaded lettering.
On the front (north) face of the lower step of the cross foot, the dates 1914 - 1919 are inscribed. The main inscription on the plinth reads: "IN HONOUR OF THOSE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1915/ (3 NAMES)/ 1916/ (2 NAMES)/ 1918/ (2 NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAME)." The words "LEST WE FORGET" are inscribed on the plinth foot below.
The east face of the plinth states "AND OF/ THOSE WHO SERVED," with names listed below. There is an additional inscription or name on the west face.
The memorial is surrounded by an area of hard standing with planting on either side. Stone planters are positioned against the base of the memorial. Modern railings mark the front (northern) boundary of the enclosure and are set between square stone piers with stepped caps at the east and west corners. At the rear, there is a curved, crenellated, rough-coursed stone wall.
