Description
Walthamstow House, now known as Corpus Christi School, is a substantial detached house dating from the mid-18th century and currently undergoing restoration as of 1985. The building is constructed of stock brick with red gauged heads and features three storeys plus a basement. It has 15 bays, including three full-height canter bay windows at the center and on either side. The entrance is located in the fifth bay from the right, set within a projecting Doric porch. The windows are segmental-headed with flush frames, sashes, and glazing bars.
Inside, the house boasts Rococo plaster ceilings in the drawing room to the left of the entrance hall and in the entrance hall itself. There is also a contemporary staircase with fluted and turned balusters. A plaque commemorates Sir Robert Wigram MP, who lived here from 1744 to 1830 and served as High Sheriff of Essex and was a merchant.
