Description

The Assembly Hall, located to the southeast of the Town Hall in Walthamstow, is a theatre built between 1937 and 1942 by architect P D Hepworth. The building is constructed from Portland stone and features a tall single-storey design. The central section is set forward and supported by six piers in antis. The front is plain while the sides are panelled, topped with a cornice and an attic. It has tall metal-framed windows that include entrances, which are recessed within a portico that has metal glazing bars and patterned glass. Additional entrances are found in the outer bays, each adorned with crests above. The return elevations also feature tall windows. To the south, there are two pairs of corniced gatepiers made of Portland stone, which have panelled sides. The Assembly Hall was designed as part of the overall Civic Centre complex.
