Description
Walthamstow Town Hall is a civic centre built between 1937 and 1942 by P D Hepworth. It is constructed of Portland stone and features a copper lantern, though the roof is not visible. The building stands three storeys high and has nineteen bays, with the end bays set forward. A central portico supported by four piers, which lack capitals and are unmoulded at the front but panelled at the sides, leads to the entrance. Above the portico, there is an inscription that reads "Walthamstow Town Hall" in the frieze. The building has a coved cornice, shallow architraves around the windows, and iron balconies at the centre of the first floor and in the pavilions. At the top, there is a tall square copper lantern with louvred sides and a clock, which is topped by an octagonal lantern featuring a cornice, ball and spike, and pinnacles at the four corners. The rear elevation includes a polygonal projection at the centre, adorned with attached figure sculptures. The entrance is flanked by Portland stone gatepiers, with two pairs to the east and two pairs to the west, all corniced and with moulded sides, linked by a low wall. A theatre to the southeast is an integral part of the design.
