Description
The former main building and council chamber of Dagenham Civic Centre was built in 1936 and designed by architect E Berry Webber. This modern-style building is constructed from mulberry coloured stocks laid mainly in English Bond, with Portland stone dressings. It features a symmetrical facade that is three storeys high with a semi-basement. The central portico, made of Portland stone, is elevated and supported by four slim clustered columns. Above the portico are three reliefs depicting the Civic Shield and representations of key local industries.
Inside, there is a glazed staircase hall, which is flanked by wings that each have 13 bays, along with an additional two-storey bay. The ends of the wings have glazed semi-circular staircase projections. The windows are metal framed casements, with the first-floor windows featuring cornices and cast iron flower guards. The building also has a stone parapet, band, and plinth, along with cast iron guards at the semi-basement level. At the rear, there is a semi-circular council chamber located behind the central staircase hall. Some modern extensions at the back do not detract from the original design.
